What is Sub-metering by production line?

Definition

Sub-metering by production line means installing electricity, water, gas, steam or air meters below the main utility meter so consumption can be assigned to each line, process or major machine.

Who needs line-level metering

Multi-line food, beverage, dairy and packaging plants need it to cost products accurately, set targets per line and confirm which changes actually saved energy. Corporate energy teams use it to compare the same line type across plants.

What to meter and how to use it

Start with loads that dominate the bill and move with production: refrigeration, compressed air, steam users, process water and the largest motors. Dividing each line's consumption by its output for the same interval gives energy and water per unit. Comparing the sum of sub-meters with the main incomer shows how much consumption is still unexplained. ISO 50001 asks certified sites to define energy performance indicators, and line meters are what make those indicators specific.

How Aqueduct ties line meters together

aQ Core organizes every meter under site, floor, zone and device, so a production line becomes a defined group of meters. The energy balance on the electric digital twin shows how much incoming load the sub-meters cover and how much remains as losses or unmetered load. Where lines share a meter, Billing Management can split it by share, the same mechanism used for tenants on shared meters.

Questions

Sub-metering by production line: common questions

Sub-metering by production line is the practice of giving each line or major process its own utility meters so its share of the bill is measured, not guessed. It turns one plant total into per-line costs and per-unit figures. Aqueduct's view is on the process water and utilities page.

Enough that the unmetered remainder is small compared with the savings you want to see. Most plants start with the largest loads and add meters where questions come up.

A logger shows one week on one load. Permanent meters catch changes between audits, such as a new leak or a control setting that drifted after maintenance.
