Water meters

Smart water meters for buildings, from the main to every line

A smart water meter reports consumption automatically instead of waiting for a manual read. Aqueduct reads inline and ultrasonic meters, bridged Modbus and M-Bus meters, camera reads of old meters and leak contact sensors.

Meter the main and the lines that matter, and let the balance show the loss.

Placement

Where meters go on a typical site

  • Main incomer

The supply side of the water balance, read continuously.

  • Risers, floors and tenants

Sub-meters that attribute use to the people and spaces using it.

  • Cooling towers, irrigation and process

The large discretionary loads where abnormal use costs most.

Decisions

What a facility team can act on

  • Night flow

Flow that never falls to zero points to a leak or a running fixture.

  • Use while empty

Consumption in an unoccupied building is raised as waste.

  • Water on the floor

Contact sensors under equipment report a flood the moment it starts.

Meter types, readings and connection

DeviceReadingConnection
Inline or ultrasonic meterTotal gallons. Flow is calculated in the cloud from the change over time.Pulse counter, or LoRaWAN direct.
Modbus or M-Bus meterTotal volume and the meter registers.Bridge to LoRaWAN.
Camera meter readerThe meter face, read by computer vision.Images to the cloud.
Leak contact sensorA leak event when water bridges the contacts.LoRaWAN.
Why it matters

What metering finds

6%+

Share of a facility's water use that leaks can account for.

10%

If more than this share of use cannot be accounted for, a facility may have leaks.

Questions

Common questions

Rarely. A meter with a pulse output keeps working with a LoRaWAN pulse counter, and a meter with no output can be read by camera. Replacement is only needed where a meter is broken or the wrong size. See pulse counters.

Yes. Meters reveal loss anywhere in the metered system, while a contact sensor tells you exactly which floor or plant room is wet. Together they turn a balance alert into a location. See leak detection.

Pipe size, pipe material and protocol decide the model for each location. Existing brands usually stay, since Aqueduct is not tied to one manufacturer and reads most common outputs. See hardware brands.

On the main incomer, then the largest discretionary loads: cooling towers, irrigation and process lines, followed by risers and tenants. Each meter added shrinks the unaccounted share of the water balance. See aQ WaterGuard.
