Pulse counters and splitters

LoRaWAN pulse counters and splitters for existing meters

A pulse counter reads the pulse output of an existing water, gas or electricity meter, where each pulse is a fixed quantity, and sends the count over LoRaWAN. A passive splitter lets the BMS keep the same signal.

Placement

Fitted at the meter, wired to its pulse output

  • Water meters

Inline and ultrasonic meters with a volume pulse.

  • Electricity meters

Revenue and check meters with a kWh pulse.

  • Gas meters

Diaphragm and rotary meters with a volume pulse.

What interval data makes possible

  • Baselines

Monthly manual reads become interval data for weather-normalized baselines.

  • Bill checks

Metered use is compared with billed use before the invoice is paid.

  • Waste events

Out of hours use on any pulse meter is raised against its expected pattern.

Questions

Common questions

The quantity one pulse represents, such as 1 kWh or 10 gallons. It is printed on the meter or its datasheet and set once in Aqueduct, which then converts each count into consumption. See water meters.

No. The splitter is passive, so the BMS or EMS keeps receiving the same pulses while Aqueduct counts them too. Both systems then see identical consumption. See keeping your BMS.

Most installed utility meters. If the register has a pulse output, whether it counts volume or kWh, a counter can be wired to it, and the datasheet confirms the output type and constant. Meters without one can use a camera reader instead. See cameras.

Interval data. A meter read monthly by hand starts reporting every few minutes, which supports weather-normalized baselines, bill checks and out-of-hours waste alerts in Aqueduct without replacing the meter. See utility bill validation.
