ISO 50001

ISO 50001 clauses an auditor tests with numbers

ISO 50001:2018 is the international standard for an energy management system, certified by an accredited body after audit. Several of its clauses can only be met with measured energy data. Aqueduct supplies that data: consumption by significant energy use, indicators and weather-normalized baselines.

Who it applies to

Any organization, of any size, that wants a structured way to manage energy. Certification is voluntary, but customers, regulators and schemes such as the UK's ESOS accept it as evidence. The standard follows plan, do, check, act and shares its structure with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

The current edition is ISO 50001:2018; the 2011 edition is withdrawn. Certification audits now include the climate action changes added by amendment.

RequirementWhat it asks forData Aqueduct supplies
6.3 Energy reviewAnalysis of energy use and consumption, identifying significant energy uses.Sub-metered consumption ranked by use, system and site.
6.4 Energy performance indicatorsIndicators that show whether energy performance is improving.kWh per unit, per square meter or per degree day, calculated from interval data.
6.5 Energy baselineA reference against which indicators are compared, revised when conditions change.Regression baselines on degree days and production, with each revision logged.
6.6 Planning for collection of energy dataWhat is measured, how and how often.A register of every meter and sensor with its interval, location and calibration date.
8.1 Operational planning and controlOperating criteria for significant energy uses.Schedules and setpoints compared with actual operation, with deviations flagged.
9.1 Monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluationEvaluation of energy performance and of the management system.Performance against baseline by period, exported for management review.

Questions

Common questions

Yes, if the energy baseline is normalized. A baseline regressed on cooling and heating degree days separates the weather effect, so the indicator reflects what the team changed. Aqueduct fits that regression from meter history or uploaded bills. See weather normalization.

The standard sets no number. The energy review decides which uses are significant, and the data collection plan says how each is measured. Most sites need sub-meters on their largest few loads.

When indicators no longer reflect energy performance, after major changes to operations or static factors, or as a method set in advance requires. Aqueduct keeps each baseline version with its reason and date, so the auditor can follow the change.

Evidence that significant energy uses were identified from analysis, that indicators are compared with a baseline, and that the data collection plan is followed. Aqueduct supplies sub-metered consumption, indicator trends and a meter register, and an accredited certification body audits the system.
