EcoStruxure Building Operation alternatives, and when to keep EBO
Schneider Electric describes EcoStruxure Building Operation (EBO) as building management system software for large buildings, part of EcoStruxure, and a native BACnet system that also supports Modbus, LonWorks and MQTT. Teams comparing EBO alternatives often want verified savings, water on the same screen, or freedom over who engineers changes. Aqueduct is an option on both sides of that decision: an overlay on EBO, or its staged successor.

EBO in Schneider Electric's own description
Schneider positions EBO for energy and operational efficiency through monitoring, management and control of building systems from a mobile-enabled control center. Its Swedish product page calls it a flexible, scalable building automation system that collects, organizes, analyzes and acts on building data.
A Schneider support article explains how an EBO server serves data outward: BACnet objects visible to external clients, Modbus serial and TCP networks, a LonWorks local node, SNMP version 3, EcoStruxure Web Services, and, from version 3.2, MQTT to brokers such as Azure IoT Hub and Amazon IoT Core.
Reasons EBO owners compare alternatives
Integrator choice
How many certified partners serve your region, and can you move the engineering to another one?
Data out versus results
EBO can publish data to cloud brokers; who turns that data into a ranked list of faults and savings?
Water and air coverage
Are water sub-meters and zone air sensors in scope, or do they need a separate project?
Upgrade effort
What does a major version change require across Enterprise Servers and SmartX controllers?
Five EBO alternatives, plus Aqueduct
Product descriptions are drawn from vendor pages listed in the sources. Silence on a vendor page is reported as silence, never as a gap.
| System | How its vendor describes it | Often shortlisted when | What to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siemens Desigo CC | A modular, scalable platform that Siemens says acts as the central hub for building disciplines, with Modbus, SNMPv3 and IEC drivers on its current page. | A site with fire, security and power wants them on the same integration platform. | Which EBO BACnet objects map directly, and which need rework. |
| Johnson Controls Metasys | Johnson Controls presents Metasys as an open automation system with multi-server redundancy and a preconfigured energy management suite in release 15.0. | An enterprise wants redundancy and benchmarking from the automation supplier. | Whether SmartX controllers stay in place under a Metasys server. |
| Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator | Honeywell says EBI can integrate with virtually any third-party system or equipment, and lists BACnet Secure Connect and OPC UA history among its capabilities. | Security, video and building systems are run from one operations center. | Which Honeywell energy services are assumed in the proposal. |
| Tridium Niagara Framework | Niagara, in Tridium's words, is a comprehensive software platform for connected products, on open-protocol standards, aimed at energy, indoor air and comfort performance among other goals. | A buyer prefers an open-protocol framework to a single-vendor stack. | Who will hold support for the stations over the next decade. |
| Automated Logic WebCTRL | Automated Logic describes WebCTRL as web-based software with built-in diagnostics, BACnet scheduling add-ons and energy reporting. | A campus wants automation software that ALC can host and maintain. | How existing EBO graphics and trends are carried across. |
| Aqueduct | Command and control across water, energy and air: Site Map, Portfolio, Digital Twin and Analytics for each module, savings converted to money through rate configuration. | You want EBO data turned into measured results, or a staged replacement starting with HVAC schedules. | Aqueduct does not supply controllers; partners install hardware, and each site's control scope is agreed in advance. |
Keep EBO, replace it, or design Aqueduct in
Keep EBO
Aqueduct subscribes to EBO data over BACnet, Modbus TCP or MQTT, and adds the water and zone air metering that sites often lack, without changing EBO programming.
Learn moreReplace EBO by system
Chillers, air handlers and rooftop units move to Aqueduct control one group at a time, with EBO servers retired once nothing depends on them.
Learn moreDesign it in
Architects and MEP engineers can name Aqueduct in the specification, with technicians tagging every device in aQ Atria before handover.
Learn moreFrom EBO to Aqueduct, one system group at a time
Open the data path
Turn on an MQTT or BACnet feed from the Enterprise Server so Aqueduct can read every point.
Price the waste
Rate configuration turns the gap between actual use and the baseline into money, site by site.
Take one plant group
Where control is enabled, with owner approval, Aqueduct runs occupancy-driven automations for that group.
Confirm and expand
Setpoint attainment and command history confirm the move before the next group follows.
Track record behind Aqueduct
countries with Aqueduct sites live, more than 300 sites in total.
or more of the energy used in commercial buildings and plants is often wasted, according to ENERGY STAR.

Common questions
Yes. Schneider documents BACnet, Modbus TCP and MQTT outputs from an EBO server, and Aqueduct can read any of them through a field device network controller or a broker. Nothing in the EBO programming changes; the added value is in baselines and component-level fault diagnosis. See keep your BMS.
No. EcoStruxure is the Schneider Electric architecture across many products, and Schneider describes EcoStruxure Building Operation as one part of it, the building management software. Comparing alternatives means comparing EBO and its SmartX controllers, not the whole EcoStruxure family.
Not always. SmartX controllers in good order can keep running their plant while Aqueduct issues commands to them over BACnet or Modbus, and hardware is then renewed on its own lifecycle. The replace path shows how functions move in order.
Aqueduct converts the gap between metered use and a weather-normalized baseline into money using the site tariff. A chiller schedule change therefore appears as a saving in local currency, and the measurement and verification feature ties each figure to the meter behind it.
