Good plant EHS monitoring measures air, water and utility conditions continuously while production runs. It hands that evidence to your EHS system, which keeps owning incidents, permits and audits.
Snapshots versus production reality
Many plants prove air quality with a periodic survey. If the survey happens on a weekend or during a shutdown, it measures a different building from the one workers stand in on a busy shift. Continuous monitoring shows the curve as production runs.
The exposure is real. WHO estimates 99 percent of the world's population lived where its air quality guidelines were not met in 2019, and indoor process areas add their own dust, fumes and VOCs. Duration matters as much as peak, so a single reading does not describe exposure.
What the monitoring must do
| Requirement | Why it matters here | Ask the vendor |
|---|---|---|
| Measure during production. | Exposure happens on shift, not during surveys. | Can you show readings against the production schedule? |
| Count exposure over time. | A short spike and a sustained level are different risks. | Do you report exposure duration by zone? |
| Track effluent and water use. | Discharge permits and water targets need records. | Can you meter effluent and reuse lines? |
| Hand events to the EHS system. | Incidents and corrective actions are tracked there. | How do events reach our EHS or CMMS tool? |
Standards that ask for measurement
ISO 14001 requires monitoring and measurement of significant environmental aspects. ISO 45001 covers worker health and safety. Effluent discharge consents set limits that need records between lab samples. In the US, EPA tightened the annual PM2.5 air quality standard to 9.0 micrograms per cubic meter in February 2024, which raises scrutiny of particulate sources around plants.
How to evaluate it
- List the evidence gapsWhich conditions do you currently prove only by sampling?
- Instrument one areaPick the process area with the most complaints or findings.
- Compare with the surveySet continuous data beside the last periodic report.
- Route an eventFollow one alert into the EHS workflow and close it.
Where Aqueduct fits
aQ AirSafe measures CO2, particulates, VOCs, temperature, humidity and sound by zone, overlays occupancy and counts exposure in zone-hours. aQ WaterGuard meters process water, effluent treatment and reuse. aQ Core keeps every reading with sensor health, so the record shows the sensor was working. Incidents and audits stay in your EHS software.
