Best EHS monitoring software for hospitals

Good hospital EHS monitoring turns air, water and utility conditions into continuous, timestamped evidence. Your EHS or compliance system then uses that evidence for surveys, incidents and corrective actions.

What EHS teams in hospitals actually need

Hospital EHS programs already have software for incidents, inspections and training. What they lack is measured conditions between inspections: the pressure in a negative pressure room overnight, CO2 in a crowded waiting area, the temperature of a hot water return loop on a weekend.

Air matters to staff as well as patients. Americans spend about 90 percent of their time indoors, where EPA notes some pollutants run two to five times higher than outdoors. A study by Milton and colleagues linked lower ventilation to a relative risk of 1.53 for short-term sick leave. Hospitals are not offices, but staff areas and waiting rooms behave much the same way.

What the monitoring must cover

RequirementWhy it matters hereAsk the vendor
Space conditions in critical rooms.Pressure, temperature and humidity drift is a survey finding waiting to happen. How long do you keep trends, and can we export them by room?
Indoor air in staff and public areas.CO2, particulates and VOCs show ventilation and cleaning problems. Can you overlay occupancy and report exposure duration?
Water safety temperatures.Loop temperatures are the first line of Legionella control. How do you alert on a loop below its limit?
A clean hand-off to the EHS system.Corrective actions belong in the system of record.Do you export or integrate events with our EHS or CMMS tool?

Standards that ask for measured evidence

The Joint Commission environment of care chapter expects hospitals to manage utility systems and air pressure relationships. ASHRAE 170 sets the design values for those spaces. ASHRAE 188 frames the water management program, and ISO 14001 asks for monitoring and measurement of significant environmental aspects.

Looking forward, ASHRAE Standard 241, published in 2023, defines equivalent clean airflow per occupant and an infection risk management mode, giving hospitals a measurable target for public spaces during outbreak periods.

How to evaluate it

  1. Pick the evidence gapsList the conditions surveyors asked about last time that you could only show by spot check.
  2. Instrument a sampleCover a few critical rooms, one waiting area and two hot water loops.
  3. Test the exportPull a month of records in the format your quality team files.
  4. Route one eventFollow an alert into the EHS or CMMS workflow and close it.

Where Aqueduct fits

aQ AirSafe tracks CO2, particulates, VOCs, temperature and humidity by zone, with occupancy overlaid and exposure counted in zone-hours, because a short spike matters less than a sustained one. aQ WaterGuard keeps loop temperature and flow records, and aQ Core holds every reading with sensor health, so an auditor can see the sensor was online. Your EHS system remains the system of record.

Questions

Questions about this topic

No. EHS software manages incidents, permits, training and audits. Aqueduct supplies the measured conditions those workflows rely on, such as overnight room pressure, waiting room CO2 and hot water loop temperatures. See what is EHS software.

Usually yes for anything in patient areas. Battery LoRaWAN sensors keep installation light, with no cabling or ceiling work, but follow your hospital's device approval and infection control process before fitting them. Clinical engineering can review device health in Aqueduct after installation.

Yes. Aqueduct routes air quality, pressure and water temperature events to different owners by zone and severity, so infection prevention, engineering and EHS each receive the events they act on. Each event carries the zone, time and reading.

Yes, as evidence. Exported trends of space pressure, temperature, humidity and loop temperatures show conditions between manual rounds, kept with each sensor's health. The hospital's own teams present them and own the program. See Joint Commission environment of care.
